Please click on your relevant link to access some important training resources and documents. This is not meant to be a replacement for the resources that you should use from the deanery and your respective college but act as a complementary source to help guide your training. Please inform Steve Mathieu or Helen Peet if there are other useful resources that we can include.

This page is for trainees who have been appointed to a CCT programme in Intensive Care Medicine.  In Portsmouth we provide stage 1, 2 and 3 training. We also are able to support FICE accreditation with two of our consultants registered FICM mentors.

During your time in the ICU you will be a valued member of the team.  You will come with a broad medical experience, and we find 'medicine' trainees often provide a different perspective to those with a background in, for example,  anaesthesia.  You should not be concerned about not having advanced airway skills, as there will always be someone available who does.

We are well aware that stepping out of the environment you are used to into critical care can seem a bit of a change, but it is one that is definitely worth making.

Dear colleagues

Welcome to the department of critical care. You will have been given information about your attachment here by Margaret and Dr Meeking at your induction meeting.
The Duty Consultants for your week with us are: Dr James McNicholas and Dr David Pogson.
The Registrar who is going to show you around is: Dr David Slessor
The consultant responsible for meeting you/long cases is: Dr Helen Peet
Dr Peet will meet you on Friday at 1430 to listen to your long case and to consider the following topics which you might like to think about during the week:

The unit is particularly busy at the moment, with winter now upon us. You will get the most out of this attachment by observing the team and making yourself available to them. Teaching will be done at the bedside and by attendance at the Friday teaching, microbiology ward rounds and by shadowing. Teaching will not be done by “tutorial teaching”. You will be provided with a bleep to carry at night, this means that the outreach team and registrar can contact you and offer learning opportunities rather than you feeling like a spare part.
I genuinely hope that you have a great week with us, but if there are any problems that can’t be resolved with the duty consultants, or registrars then please contact myself on
    helen.peet@porthosp.nhs.uk or David.Shearn@porthosp.nhs.uk

    Kind Regards

    Helen Peet
