Follow up

Our critical care follow-up clinic has been running since 2001. It is led by two consultant (Dr P Young and Dr Kay Adenijii) and one of the Senior sisters (Sandra Taylor). Clinic generally sees patients who have a stay of over 3 days in Critical Care. They are seen for up to the first year post discharge home.

Why the Clinic?

Patients can have multi-faceted problems related to Critical Care and recovery can take up to 2 years.
The ICU follow up clinic’s aims are based on the principles of the
NICE guideline 83 (2009) for rehabilitation after critical illness. These include:

  • Providing information for patients or relatives on their ICU stay
  • Functional assessments
  • Individualised staged rehabilitation programmes
  • Identifying and supporting physical and psychological issues
  • Onward referrals for specialist care (medical and psychological)
  • Providing a contact person for ongoing support
  • Making the service available to all ICU patients

How often are the clinics?

The Clinic is run weekly.

Advice Given
