Consultants
We have 15 consultants who provide a 24 hour service. Our consultants are assisted by other more junior doctors called registrars (ST 3-7), specialist trainees (ST 1-3) and Foundation doctors (FY1-2). They also work very closely with the multidisciplinary team of nurses, ACCP’s, physiotherapists, pharmacists and other specialists. Consultants will conduct twice daily wards to discuss your or your relatives test results and progress and will make any necessary changes to treatment plans. Dr Kayode Adeniji
BMedSci MRCP MSc FFICM
Kayode is a Consultant in Respiratory and Intensive Care Medicine. He studied Medicine at the Royal London Medical College. Following the completion of his specialist training he undertook a Critical Care fellowship at the University Health Network in Toronto, Canada before taking up his post at QA in 2012. He is the departments Respiratory and Outreach Lead with an interest in early rehabilitation following critical illness. He is also the Joint lead for the Critical Care follow-up clinic. This dovetails with his role as Cardio-pulmonary Exercise Testing lead for the Trust and contribution to the domiciliary Non-Invasive Ventilation service in the Respiratory department.

Dr Alexandra Belcher
BA (Hons), MBBS, MRCP, FRCA, FFICM
Alex started as a locum Consultant in February 2018. She studied medicine at Oxford University then subsequently at The Royal Free and UCLH Medical School. Her joint anaesthetic and intensive care training was completed in the Wessex region. Since starting, she has taken up the role of monitoring line-related infections.

Dr Sara Blakeley
Sara has been a consultant on the Intensive Care Unit at QA since 2007. She studied medicine at Southampton University Medical School, and following that completed training in Nephrology, General Medicine and ultimately Intensive Care Medicine. This was done in Wessex, London and Melbourne, Australia. Her particular interests are in Critical Care Nephrology. She is the medical lead for the hospitals Tracheostomy Support Team and works on the Surgical High Care Unit. She is also the departmental lead for electronic drug prescribing and equipment lead.

Dr John Knighton
Started as a Consultant in 2000. Led from an early stage the planning and design of the new Intensive Care Unit and QAH Hospital which opened in 2009. Departmental lead roles for Audit, IT and Governance prior to taking over as Clinical Director in 2010 - 2016. He was subsequently the Chief of Service for Critical Care, Anaesthesia and Theatres as well as the Associate Medical Director before his appointment as Medical Director in 2017.
Dr Steve Mathieu

Steve is a Consultant in Critical Care and Anaesthetics. He studied Medicine at St. Bartholomews Hospital, London. He completed a medical rotation, obtaining his MRCP, before training in Anaesthetics and Intensive Care Medicine in the Wessex region. He was appointed as a Consultant in 2010. He is the IT Lead and Faculty Tutor for Intensive Care Medicine Training and recently appointed as the Clinical Director for Intensive Care. He was elected a council member for the Intensive Care Society in 2016. His interests include patient and relative experience, training and medical education and use of information technology in medicine. Also practises in Anaesthesia and maintains an active interest in Colorectal Anaesthesia and enhanced recovery.

Dr James McNicholas
James McNicholas was appointed in 2007 as a Consultant in Anaesthesia and Critical Care, having completed his training in the Wessex region. His interests include paediatric trauma medicine, and the practice of intensive care medicine in the austere environment. James has worked overseas on a number of occasions during his career and holds the Diploma in the Medical Care of Catastrophes. His organisational responsibilities within the department include clinical audit. Portsmouth has supported the RCOA Compendium of clinical audit by providing detailed examples of clinical audit completed in the department.

Dr Helen Peet
Helen joined the department in August 2013 as a consultant in critical care and anaesthetics. Having trained at the University of Wales College of Medicine she initially trained in hospital medicine obtaining MRCP before changing to dual training in Anaesthetics and Intensive Care Medicine. Having worked in Paediatric Intensive Care she maintains an interest in the stabilisation of sick children and in the provision of anaesthesia for children. Her other interests are the use of echocardiography in intensive care and training for the multidisciplinary team in management of the deteriorating patient. She was appointed co-faculty Tutor for ICM in training in 2016
Dr David Pogson
MB BCh MSc FRCA FFICM
David was appointed consultant in 2002. He graduated from the University of Wales College of Medicine in 1992 and trained in the South West Peninsula and Australia, obtaining FRCA in 1998 and MSc from Plymouth University in 2002. He has a clinical interest in Toxicology and the management of cardiac arrest survivors. He also practices Anaesthesia. David is the Division 6 lead for NIHR CRN research in Wessex, supervising research delivery across the division 6 specialties in the region. He remains the specialty group lead for CRN Critical Care research in Wessex. He is our unit research lead and is the lead investigator for the many clinical trials within ICU. He manages our liaison with the University of Portsmouth as associate academic department within the school of health Sciences and Social Work. He is an examiner for MRCS part B.

Dr Paul Sadler
Graduated from University of Sheffield Medical School joining the British Army and serving in Falklands, South Georgia, Belize, Middle East, Bosnia and Kosovo. He completed his training in Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthesia in London and the Midlands developing major interests in medical education, ethics, and sepsis. As well as working as a full time clinician, he has continued to develop his role in education through roles a a programme director, head of school and Associate Dean, until now becoming Director of Education for Portsmouth Hospitals.
Dr Nick Tarmey
FRCA DipIMC RCS(Ed) DICM RAMC
Nick is a Consultant in Critical Care and Anaesthetics at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth. He joined the department in 2012, serving as a Military Consultant for the British Army before taking up a full-time civilian post in 2016.
Nick studied Medicine at the University of Glasgow, before completing his military training and serving overseas as a Medical Officer in Iraq in 2003. He trained in Anaesthetics and Intensive Care Medicine in the Wessex region, during which time he completed a year’s Trauma Anaesthesia Fellowship in Baltimore, USA and served on his first of two tours of Afghanistan. In September 2014 he deployed to Sierra Leone as part of the British Army’s response to the Ebola crisis.
In addition to his clinical work in Critical Care and Anaesthetics, Nick serves as an Honorary Senior Lecturer and Clinical Governance Lead for the Academic Department of Critical Care.

Dr Matthew Williams
MB, ChB, DCH. FRCA, PGCertMedEd, FFICM
Matt started as a Consultant in Critical Care and Anaesthesia in 2005. He studied medicine at the University of Bristol. Postgraduate training was completed in the South West region, which included general and neonatal paediatrics, intensive care in Melbourne, Australia, and specialist Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine (ICM) in the Wessex region which included a year at the University of Michigan Hospitals, USA. He maintains a vascular anaesthetic interest. His interests are in medical education, ethics, and patient safety.
He is the Regional advisor for ICM training, ACCP co-lead trainer, and the Trust’s Lead for Simulation training.
